Sirigu women organization of pottery and art in Northern Ghana

Share with us the joy of art and culture

Sirigu is a village in Northern Ghana, West-Africa. The village is well known for its traditional architecture, pottery and wall designing. Since 1997, more than 150 women of Sirigu have formed an organization for pottery and art (SWOPA: Sirigu women organisation of pottery and art). Their aim is to preserve and develop their traditional culture and to provide tourist services and produce high quality art that has its roots in the village culture.

What can you do at Sirigu?

You are welcome to spend as much time in the Visitor Centre as you wish. A small donation is requested. Picture-taking is encouraged.

During your stay in Sirigu, we have to offer:

    • An art gallery
High quality pottery, baskets and paintings are for sale for moderate prices. Learn the history of the pottery, and the symbolism of the patterns used in the art and wall decoration. You may be able to talk with the artists themselves.
    • A workshop for pottery and painting.
You can arrange in advance to work with the SWOPA artists and learn the techniques involved in pottery, baskets, and even wall designs. SWOPA members will take you through the entire process.
    • Tour the village.
Go on a guided tour of area homes. The homes belong to SWOPA members who are keeping the house decoration traditions alive. You will have an opportunity to interact with the women themselves. Our guides will accompany you to other points of interest in and around Sirigu, including the Chief's Palace, Sacred Groves, and the Local Market.
    • A guesthouse and restaurant.
The guesthouse has been built inside the SWOPA compound. It offers clean and quiet housing for tourists built in a unique style. Meals and drinks are available.
